NEWBORNS AND I

Once upon a time I thought newborn sessions meant beanbags and props and patiently waiting for that perfect curled-up pose. And then I thought maybe lifestyle is the best way to go, completely avoiding all these things, concentrating purely on catching the unguarded moments, the sighs, and new life in all it’s glory. Somewhere along the way I’ve realised that neither of these, specifically, is how I like to shoot. What I mean by this is regardless of whether I go in to a session with the intention of shooting one way or the other, invariably I end up doing a bit of both. Natural candid moments mixed in with the set up and the posed. Well, semi-posed anyway.
It was a light-bulb moment for me when I realised this is actually ok. This is good. This is how I love to shoot and what I love to present to my sweet clients. I adore that we can put an album together that tells the story of their little miracle, and that they also have stand-alone portraits to blow up and grace their walls with. It’s the best of both worlds, wrapped up in one little session.

Below are some images from Elsie’s recent session, which are now what I’d call typical of one of my newborn shoots. They make me smile from ear to ear, especially as I imagine how much she will have changed even in the short time since these were taken. And they make me happy, because I get to do what I do, and what I do makes people happy too. And so it goes.

I look forward to seeing you again little Elsie, and how you’ve grown. And how you’ve cemented your place amongst your family – how they could never imagine life without you, or remember what it was like before they felt your breath on their necks, or your hand wrapped tightly around their fingers.
Sweet Elsie, you are loved. So very dearly and clearly.
