NEWBORN JOY | CHLOE

Yesterday I had the joy of photographing sweet little Chloe, a seven week-old baby doll. At seven weeks of age Little Miss Chloe still weighs less than Alicia-Rae did when she was born.  Before you go thinking Alicia-Rae came in to the world ready to contend the heavy-weight title for newborns, she was actually spot on ‘average’, at 7lb 5oz.  Chloe was simply a beautiful little peanut, who was in a hurry to meet her mummy and daddy, weighing just over 4lb when she arrived.  She’s doing so well now, even treating her mummy and daddy to 5 hour stretches of sleep overnight.  They’ve gotta love that.

Chloe was fast asleep when she arrived, the hot weather here having a natural calming effect on her.  But, like most babies her age, she was busy sorting out her sleeping routine and thought it would be more fun to be awake for the session.  But that’s ok.  I love capturing the wide-eyed innocence of newborns, the eyes that don’t quite focus and so appear to be looking at you both intently and softly at the same time. And I love the interaction between mummy and baby, and daddy as well if he’s keen to join in.  I actually think I’m more in my element when baby chooses not to sleep, which is just as well given my run of late.

And yesterday I had the joy of seeing a beautiful baby doll who was adored beyond doubt by her parents.  Their faces lit up with each movement, each smile. They doted. They coo-ed. They loved. I watched, and I smiled at the wonder of new life and how it touches those around it.  I marvelled at these third-time parents and how it was just like the first time for them. The newness had in no way become old, and it was beautiful.

Thank you Lisa and Troy for the honour of photographing your precious little girl.  It was a pure delight.

All this laying down and being adored is so tiring…

And I just adore this one, how Chloe’s face is tilted up searching for her mummy, making that sweet connection.

Vincent

My first session for the day, and it was off to a good start.  I walked in the door to be greeted by the most delicious of aromas and a fresh cup of hot coffee. Mmmmm.
And Vincent, my subject for the morning, was just as divine, if not more so.  He had an impossibly gorgeous little face, and the rosiest of cheeks (teething will do that to you). He was a little shy, but we soon worked a smile or two out of him with all our dancing and singing, and funny face pulling.  Maybe he thought we were funny, or perhaps he just smiled because he felt sorry for us.  Either way works for me.

I love this age.  And I know I say that whether it’s a newborn, a six month or a two year old child I photograph.  I guess they all have their endearing qualities, each being at a unique stage in their lives.  But at six months, most children are very alert, and very curious.  They love soaking up their surroundings, and their eyes – so wide and full of innocence – contain the essence of childhood.  And what I’d give to have eyes like Vincent.  Boy, are the girls in trouble in sixteen years or so.

These are just a few images from his session.  I’m glad we managed a few smiles out of your little boy, Antonella – he really is beautiful. Such a sweet little soul.

Thanks for a great start to the weekend, Antonella and John. It really was a pleasure spending time with you all.  You have a gorgeous family, and it was an honour being able to capture your little guy at this stage of his life.

Alex and John: a sneeky peek.

I always wanted twins. Well, actually, I really wanted triplets – just to be different.  Having twins would be too ‘ordinary’.  When we found out we were pregnant with Jaedon we praying desperately to see two tiny bodies pop up during our first ultrasound.  At that stage though I think it had more to do with getting our dream of having two children done in one hit.  Obviously we didn’t pray hard enough.
I was about 14 weeks pregnant with Alicia-Rae by the time I had my first check-up, where I was told by both midwives present they would be very surprised if I wasn’t having twins. Too late, God.  We already knew how much work just one child is – we certainly weren’t praying for two this time around. I must have been indulging my pregnancy related sweet-tooth just a bit too much though, as it turned out there was just one in there, and I was simply about 6 weeks bigger than I should have been.  I hate to admit it, but I breathed a big sigh of relief.

That’s why I’m always so impressed when I turn up for a twins session and am greeted calmly by a mum and dad with everything under control, appearing as though they’ve been parents all their lives. And parents to not just one child, but two.  That’s what Alex and John’s parents were like. They were incredibly relaxed, warm, carefree people who were clearly in love with their little boys, and thoroughly enjoying parenthood.
Maybe I just caught them on a good day. I hope so. That way I can feel a bit better about wondering how I survived doing it one at a time.  They just made it look too easy.

Their two little guys are totally gorgeous though - it was easy to see why mum’s face lit up whenever they were near, and why dad was so proud and soft at the same time (and I mean that in a good way, Les).  Even I was proud of the way they handled the session.  Thank you so much for having me over, Sharryn and Les. It really was a pleasure to spend some time with you, and capture a small piece of your lives together. You all make such a lovely little family.
Here’s a few of your images that I just had to share. Each one of them bought a smile to my face as they filled my monitor.

This last one in particular fills my face with the biggest grin imaginable – it’s just pure adorableness.

Thanks again, guys. Your boys were such a joy to photograph.  I’m so glad you found me in the end.

Are you expecting?

I am. Not in the I’m expecting a baby kind of way, but in the I’m expecting great things from the coming year kind of way. Exciting things. New things.
I have plans – some of them scare me, because they’ll take me way out of my comfort zone.  But I believe they’ll be great for the business, because they’ll be great for me, and that kind of stuff usually has a roll-on effect.  But my faith is in the fact that the effects will keep rolling once they hit me, and keep on going.  But more of the scary stuff later.  :)
The not-so-scary stuff involves newborns. They’re not scary at all. Unless you’re a man. :)
So I’m looking for lots of yummy newly born babies to photograph.  and play with. and cuddle. and smell. mmmmm. Okay, primarily to photograph. The extra stuff is a bonus, seeing as mine are no longer babies. sniff.
If you have recently given birth (and your little one is under 2 weeks of age) or are due to deliver within the next 2 months, I am going to be running a little promotion that you’ll love.  With every newborn session booked for July and August I’m going to offer a complimentary (and beautiful) 12×18 inch fine art canvas print, valued at $260.  It’s my way of saying thankyou for letting me play with and cuddle you precious little bundle.  And photographing him or her too, of course.
So please spread the word if a woman in your life is expecting.  And if she’s (or you’re) expecting twins, even better – double the fun.
I really do look forward to hearing from all you new mums, or mum-to-be’s out there.  There’s few things, photography-wise, that bring me as much joy as capturing a new life.  And here’s a little taster to sign off with:

I couldn’t help myself!

We had some good friends over this morning. Mum was one of my bridesmaids (many moons ago…) and we’ve both since added 2 kids each to the mixture. Apart from my own children, of course, they would have to be the most gorgeous children ever. The daughter actually features on my website:

We’ve been trying to arrange a session with her son since he was born (he’s now 4 months old) and hadn’t quite managed, so I whipped the camera out while they were here and got some shots for her. Seriously – it would have to be the quickest, easiest session ever!  :)   He was such a darling.  And I’m adoring the photos so much I had to process a few and blog them so mum can see, even though I should be working on the pile I have waiting for me already…. (such is life)….
I hope you love them J, as much as I do.  Oh, gosh, he’s just so gorgeous – you lucky mama, you.  :)
