Nicola & Amalia: Christened

The brief I was given requested a collection of photographs, recording the story of the day. Their day. Their daughters’ Christening.
I was to capture those unposed moments, the smiles, and the tears (there were just a few of those), preferably in black and white. They left that to my discretion though, trusting that I would judge what suited each image best.
It sounded like just the kind of day I’d enjoy. And I did.

I’d not met Vicki prior to the christening service, but I knew she’d be wearing purple and standing at the front of the church with her three daughters – the twins, which were being christened, and their slightly older sister.  In the back of my mind I half expected a slightly frazzled woman attempting to keep everyone and everything together.  I know what young children are like at events like this.  But she was graceful, and calm, and beautiful. And everything was completely under control.  I certainly take my hat off to her.
So I got to work, by standing at the back of the church and capturing some of those candid, unposed moments we were after. And because she was so graceful, calm, and beautiful, I had to start with Vicki.

It was certainly easy to hang back and get some lovely candid shots – I just had my new lens delivered that week, which was made for this purpose.  It stayed on my camera for 90% of the christening (just for you folk that love to ask what gear I’m using…).  It’s not the best lens if you’re trying to be inconspicuous though.  I may as well go the whole way and paint it bright orange and really get myself noticed.
Anyway, back to the important stuff. The photos.
I also love this one – a brief pause, together as family.

It was obvious that mum and dad have a lot of love and respect for one another, and I see that, and their ability to connect, in this image.
And this one below reminds me of the pride Savva had in his girls, all four of them.

I ended up capturing a lot of the photos in black and white, as it suited the mood just beautifully, but it was such a gorgeous church that I had to leave some of them in colour, including the next couple, of the two godparents (who also looked like they were enjoying themselves).

The Proud Parents, after the service was over.  And I have to say here that I really hope these aren’t the same daughter – even after all the hours editing the shots I’m still having trouble telling them apart. *blush*

The reception was also a blast. I had so much fun capturing the fun that everyone else was having. And sneaking bits of food in, after the kitchen was kind enough to make up a plate for me.  Gimme a plate full of dips and bread and I’m a happy girl.  :)
The girls were definately centre stage, and I loved sneaking around and getting moments like this ‘on film’:

And, of course, gotta love me some fun-lovin dancin shots to end up on.  These guys certainly knew how to party.

What a beautiful day it was.  Thank you so much Vicki and Savva for having me document the day for you.  It really was a pleasure to spend time with you and your beautiful family.  And you were right, Vicki – they did cry nearly the whole way through the service, didn’t they.  ;)

And just for a bit of viewing pleasure, below is a short slideshow put together from the day.  It’ll take a minute or so to load.

More to come

I’m currently working my way through editing a client gallery, though I should have been in bed a loooooooooong time ago – but I just can’t help myself. And I can’t help jumping the gun a little and sharing just one photo.

Seriously – how impossibly gorgeous is she?!!  And better yet  – there’s another soul just like her. The spitting image in fact.

More tomorrow night, all going well.

Baby Jacob: Slideshow

A few posts back I shared some photographs from Jacob’s christening.  The final gallery of images I sent through to mum and dad was HUGE – in fact they’re probably still sitting there going through them as I type.  And I hope they’re smiling, just as I do each time I look through them.  It was such a great day, full of love and festivities.

The’ve no doubt got a lot of friends and families that would like to view the images also, but wouldn’t necessarily want to go through each and every one of them, so I’ve put together an abridged version for them, and for anyone else that may like to watch the slideshow and take part themselves in the joy.  I’m posting the slideshow below. Simply click play and wait for it to load. Then enjoy.

Thanks again, Snez and Tony. It really was a wonderful day, and a memorable experience.

Sneak Peek: Baby Jacob

Late last year I got to photograph this gorgeous little boy

who has somehow grown up in the last 8 months (as babies have a habit of doing) and turned into this impossibly more gorgeous little boy (is that bad grammar??)

I was extremely privileged to be asked by his mummy and daddy to photograph his christening.  It was unlike any other christening I’ve been to. In a great way, of course.
I’m used to the stock-standard aussie-style christening, not the beautifully traditional celebration that is a Macedonian christening.  And do these guys know how to celebrate.  I often forgot I was there to work, I was enjoying it so much.
The day started at Jacob’s house as I, along with the videographer, captured everyone getting ready.  The little man of the day was in a great mood from the get go, which made my job nice and easy.  What a great little personality he’s developed.

Mum was smart and asked for a few family shots to be taken while everyone was all prettied up.  These are a couple of my favourites (the light in their house is just divine!!!)  And if I forgot to mention it – Snez, you looked stunning!

From there it was on to the ceremony, which I absolutely adored.  I’m convinced I was the only mono-lingual person there, and mistakenly mistook the priest to be speaking in Latin. I wondered how everyone else was doing such a great job of following what he was saying *insert blush here*.
It was such a wonderful service, even being unable to understand it, and so many lovely images that I had a hard time choosing what to share here.  But one image that jumped out at me was this one

It spoke a lot to me about the relationship between father and son.  As an observer throughout the day I saw a lot of love pass between them, and it was a very special thing to witness.  Daddy was clearly proud of his little boy, as he should be.  And it’s being able to capture these emotions and moments that endears me so much to what I do.

After the christening ceremony, it was on to the reception. Think lots of food, lots of dancing, and loads of celebrating going on and you’ll have a rough idea what it was like.
I was super impressed with how well Jacob took it in stride.  I’m not even sure I saw him cry, not even once, all day.  Not that it was easy getting him to smile.  I think I’d been dubbed ‘the crazy lady’ by the end of the night, and my tongue had gone numb from blowing raspberries for the duration.
I just love this shot, though not my usual style, taken almost at the end of the evening.

We’d snuck out to one of the reception rooms, decorated with French-style decor, which suited his christening outfit just perfectly.  While mum and dad were chatting to some guests he was putting on quite the show for me.

And lastly, for now, is a shot which sums up the day for me.

I would easily say a wonderful time was had by all that were there, myself included.  Snez and Tony – thank you so much for the honour of recording this very special day for you all.  I can’t wait to share the rest of the images with you
