The Idea of North - Live.

If you’ve been to my website recently you’ll have heard an awesome, if not familiar sounding, song playing in the background.  I was kindly given permission to use this song by the amazingly talented vocal group The Idea of North.
They were in Melbourne this weekend gone, playing at Chapel off Chapel (in Prahran), so I not only had the pleasure of going to see them live in action again, but I also got to photograph them in action as well.
Before I share some of the pics I have to say that if you ever get the chance to go see these guys, do it!!  These are seriously not only incredibly gifted musically, but are brilliant and witty entertainers as well.  You certainly get a lot of bang for your buck at their gigs.  :)
This one below is one of my favourite moments from the show - during their version of The Bee Gees’ ‘Staying Alive’.  Not only should it be illegal for men to be able to sing that high… but dance moves like that should be banned too, Andrew.  (And from the looks on the faces of the other three, I’d say they agree. :) )

From up the back of the seating (thanks again for the use of your lens, Nick - I’m still suffering serious glass envy here…)

I love the lighting in this one

And I also loved the casual interactiveness of this show. And I can’t help but feel Nick was keeping an eye on me here just to make sure I was taking good care of his baby (his glass one, that is)

And here’s each of the team members in action.

And last, but not least - in honour of Movember I couldn’t help but post the following photograph.
The Village People would be proud.  :)

Thanks again guys for the great afternoon. It was an absolute pleasure.

These are a few of my favourite things | Sunday Dinner.

Once apon a time I would have named a roast as my favourite Sunday Dinner. But now, for a Sunday night, it involves too much work.  :)  And now that summer is well and truly on it’s way (it was 31 degrees C here yesterday) who wants to be ending the weekend by slaving away in a hot kitchen.  A nice glass of chilled wine, a Banrock Station White Shiraz to be more specific, and a generous serving of prawn salsa is more to my liking these days.
It’s been a while since I’ve been able to fully appreciate a good glass of wine (or any alcohol for that matter) having had 2 children close together and breastfeeding them both, so I probably reach the ‘height of appreciation’ much quicker than most. And while I normally prefer a red wine to a white or a rose, there’s something about sitting down on a balmy evening with a cold glass in hand, the condensation hitting your lips before the wine does.  I have to confess that the White Shiraz was a bit of a bit of a subsutitute for us though; while we were living in England we fell in love with Zinfandel but, judging from the puzzled looks from salesmen and friends alike, no-one seems to have heard of it over here in Aus.
And I’m not sure what I like most about the prawn salsa - whether it’s because it tastes divine, or because Matt cooks it for me and all I have to do is sit back and eat it.

These are a few of my favourite things | chocolate

Ok - so I’ve been racking my brains lately thinking about what sort of things I can blog about. I like the idea of this place being about more than just sessions and sneak peaks.  I want it to reflect a bit of who I am as well (whether that’s a good idea or not  :)  ).
One thought that sprung to mind while typing out my last post was to photograph various ‘favourites’ of mine. So, naturally, my first post on this subject would have to be about chocolate.  :)

Anyone that knows me remotely well will know of my fond affection for the food of the gods (a bit of interesting trivia, for those of you so far unaware, the cacao bean plant’s botanical name is Theobroma cacao, and literally means “food of the “gods”. There you go - you can actually get an education by visiting my blog…)  Anyway. If I had to pick a favourite chocolatey sensation (which is the point of this post) there wouldn’t be much of a competition really. Hands down it would be Haighs.  And I’m not just saying that because they used to employ me (and boy, what a hard job that was!), but because it is seriously the best chocolate. Ever.
If you’re lucky enough to live in Melbourne, Sydney, or Adelaide (the only cities they have stores in), and for some unknown reason you haven’t tried it, you simply must do.  Actually - know what I’m gonna do? If you don’t live in one of these cities, and would like to try some, leave a comment under this post.  Next Sunday (the 28th) I’ll randomly choose a poster and mail them a block of my favourite chocolatey sensation favourite - the milk chocolate block (boring, I know, but oh so yummy…). And, because I’m feeling generous, even if you do live in one of these cities you can still join in. I’m all about sharin the love (and the chocolate).  Good luck.  :)

(Oh, and if you have any other ‘favourites’ you’d like to see me take pics of, leave a note about that in the comments too….)

A boy’s day out.

Our little boy has spent a lot of time cooped up inside lately with everyone being sick.  That’s not what little boys are made for. So yesterday Jaedon and I decided to have a day out together (well, I decided for him - but that’s my job as his mum. I’m sure he didn’t mind though.  :) ).
We left Alicia-Rae at home with Nanna and caught a train into the city. Gosh, does my boy love trains! He sat in his own seat by the window, keeping an eye out in both directions for passing trains, making sure to excitedly point them out to anyone game enough to show interest.
Here he is waiting for one that he heard long before it arrived

We got off the train and headed for the nearest park, where we spent an hour or so before heading off to KFC for some ‘chits’ (more commonly known as ‘chips’) for lunch, followed by some chocolate from Haighs (if you’ve not tried Haighs before, you’ve not tried chocolate. Seriously. Mmmmmmm).
Then we decided to catch another train (which was really a tram) down to the beach. And what a glorious afternoon for it.  Jaedon of course headed straight for the sand, followed more tentatively by his mother, who’s forgotten what it’s like not to worry about getting sand in her shoes…

And being the true explorer (and boy) that he is, while I was busy with the pointless task of emptying my shoes, he was off - heading for the pier at the end (which he just nicely fit under by the way. Me not so much).

It’s a gorgeous old pier, and if I had have been there by myself, instead of with a 2 year old with no fear of water, I would have hung around a bit longer and taken a few more shots.

Fortunately we picked a good time to leave. The clouds had started rolling in, the sky was getting dark and, sure enough, by the time our current train (tram) had reached it’s connecting one it was pelting down with rain.  But the oncoming stormclouds made for a beautiful view during our slightly hurried departure.

All in all it was a great day.  I do miss being able to devote my time to my little guy sometimes (and I’m sure he does too).  He’s such a sweet little treasure, and he makes me feel so glad to be a mum. His mum.

Spring is in the air, and in our back yard…

Yea, I know. I’m 2 days late welcoming in my favourite season of the year. But i’ve been sick, and it’s been raining. But, woohoo, the sun was out today and I was all inspired to go down into our yard and get some springtime photographs to celebrate (you’ve gotta love Melbourne - winter one day, summer the next).
And I picked the perfect time of day to go down, just as the sun was all glow-y and warm (is glow-y even a word?) - perfect for backlighting, which I just love.  I would have dragged the children down for a mini photo session but they’ve got what I have (they probably gave it to me) so they stayed rugged up indoors in front of the telly. Sounds like the life.

Point and Shoot

I have a confession - these aren’t recent photos, as in taken in the last 3 years.  I was going through some old folders this evening and came across our trip to Italy, which was in July 2005.  It brought back lots of great memories - apart from the day I vomited all the way from Pisa to Rome (I was pregnant with Jaedon at the time). But I’m sure you didn’t want to know that.  :)
But I just thought I’d share a couple of my favourite pics from the trip - I think of them that way because they’re so ‘Italian’ in my mind. Both scenes should be familiar to most if not all of you.
And guess what - they were taken with a point and shoot camera!  These days I shoot with a Canon digital SLR, but back then I was using a Panasonic Lumix. I loved that camera. Seriously. I worked that poor thing to death (well, almost - it did find a grateful home after I’d finished with it), but I learnt how to make the most of it and got some photographs out of it that are better than I do now with my current camera. I’ve seen some people do amazing things with point and shoots - stuff that would easily show these two up as snapshots.
Maybe I’m just trying to convince myself that I don’t need the latest and greatest camera out there, but then I just go through some of my old stuff, photographs that I love, and realise I don’t need to. Not just yet anyway.  Ask me again tomorrow.  lol
