Monthly Archives: January 2009

A time for renewing.

I had the best session today. I loved it!  Having a quick flick through the proofs there are so many that I adore already.  I would so love to stay up all night editing them, but my children might not thank me for it tomorrow…   So I’ve stuck to just a few, as I desperately wanted to share some already.
I had the honour this afternoon of photographing Aneta and Ferdi as they renewed their wedding vows. It was a very special, and unique, way of celebrating their first anniversary, and I’m very glad I got to share it with them.  Although I don’t let on, I’m a bit of a sucker for romance.  I love to see people so openly crazy for one another, and so affirming of the commitment they’ve made.  And when they’re as impossibly gorgeous as these two it’s a photographer’s dream come true.
They had a great day for it – even if it was a little hot (and even if I came home a few shades redder than I was when I left)- definately a great start to their week away together.  And to many, many more years together.
Anyway – seeing as I’ve been busting to get these posted I should probably do as much…

The very happy couple

I have to add here that Aneta was extremely photogenic, so I really didn’t have to work too hard with this shoot.  I just love her look in this one.

Don’t they just ooze sexy…

One of my faves from the session – totally!

And I adore this one too – such a beautiful couple

I hope you’re enjoying your time away, A & F. And as much as I can’t wait for you to see these, I hope it’s not until you get back, and that you got lots of ‘nothing’ time in away from the laptop.  :)
Oh, and Aneta, it wasn’t Billy Zane that came to mind – if you’re a Prison Break fan you’ll know who I mean when I say Sucre. What do you think? Definately a resemblance!

52 Pieces of Me – it’s my turn now.

Yep. I’m crazy.  And I’m still not sure why I’m doing this, but my challenge for this year (photographically) is to take a self portrait for each of the next 52 weeks. Hmmmmmm. Not bad for someone that doesn’t like having their photograph taken. At least this way I only have to smile for myself I guess.  ;-)
This isn’t something I thought up by myself, but I thought I’d give it a go anyway.  It kinda sounds like fun. In a sadistic kind of way. Hopefully it wont result in all my loyal readers being scared away…
Soooooo, I’m gonna try post them every Wednesday (tonight I’ll bring you up to date with the three I’ve already taken).  I promise to post even the ones that make me cringe, or laugh, or make me want to hide myself in a paper bag. It will be good for me. I think. I hope.

Week 1

Week 2 (feeling a bit tired and ‘blah’ when it was time to take this one…)

Week 3

And I just have to share this one of Jaedon and I.  While I was attempting to take my SP photo Jaedon decided  he wanted in on the fun.  Both our kids have this thing about getting all affectionate and then poking us in the eye.  Which they find hilarious of course.
I have so few photos of me with either kids, so this has become a new favourite, even though I had to endure a poke in the eye to get it.   :-)

Life’s greatest pleasures

There are a number of things I could include under the heading of ‘Life’s greatest pleasures’, and if you know me at all (personally) there’s probably a list of things you’d expect me to write here.  Maybe it would go something like this:

1. Baileys on ice
2. A long hot shower
3. Haigh’s Chocolate
4. Marriage
5. Sarah-Lee ice-cream
6. Sleeping in
7. A good book
8. A great movie
9. Receiving real mail. The old-fashioned type. You know – the kind that you wait all morning for the postman to deliver.  :)
10. The smell of new pyjamas (which will always remind me of Christmas), tied with the smell of grass after it rains.

Well I’ve found something that tops all of these things. Actually, almost all of these things (I have to add that bit just in case my husband is reading this…  ;-) ).
A smile. A totally unexpected, spontaneaous, pure, sweet smile, that starts in the heart and lights up the eyes. There’s nothing like it.  And our son would have to be one of the best at giving them.
We were outside playing recently, with Jaedon on his bike and me chasing him around the yard.  I guess he’s not quite over my 366 project yet because he suddenly stopped, looked me deep in the eye and said, questioningly, ‘camera?’ then proceeded to drag me up the stairs and back inside to find the said object.  Not that we had to look too hard – it’s never far from arms reach (you know, just in case…). Then he pleaded earnestly, ‘photo…’ (this from a boy with a rather limited vocab, so I was suitably impressed).  Then he searched out a place that, to him, was just so. Then he laughed as he posed and took off. Photo session over. I got one motion-blurred, out of focus shot in before he was gone. But as far as I see it, it’s perfect.
It’s the smile that only he gives me, that says what only him and me will ever understand.  If I could reach into the monitor, grab his sweet little face and kiss it right now (while writing this) I would. The way that smile makes me feel is definately one of Life’s Greatest Pleasures.

Getting back into it.

It’s been a bit quiet here lately, hey. Especially after the last month’s marathon of posting.
Truthfully, I’ve been enjoying the break, but also a bit sad about having to work at picking my camera up. I’ve been enjoying the break just a bit too much.
I am getting my phojo back again though, especially when I have a gorgeous little girl to play model for me.

This is mostly how I’ve been ‘refreshing’ myself creatively – by sewing.  I’ve really been enjoying it, and it’s such a pleasure to watch Alicia-Rae run about in something I put together with my own hands. Well, my hands and a sewing machine.  I came across a really funky pattern online, which I’m waiting to arrive from the states, and I’m so looking forward to it arriving sometime soon. So keep an eye out for the next addition to AR’s modelling portfolio.  :)

It’s been beautiful weather here in Melbourne this week, which has also helped to get me back into the mood.  We met up with the cousins yesterday and all headed down to the beach for a bit.  I do love summer in Melbourne, and being on the beach in the height of it. It’s normally quite windy in the bay so it does a great job of blowing the cobwebs away.  :)
Anywho – here’s just a few snaps from our little adventure yesterday which makes me feel all summery again looking at them, despite the fact that in true Melbourne style the weather has dropped back down to 20 degrees or so, and it’s overcast and windy….

Having fun with his aunty, sending their dog Mocha into the surf after a ball.  Jaedon’s like his mama and likes to take his time getting wet, so any distraction will do.  ;-)

Getting closer

Going for it

Drying off and waiting for the cousins to either tire or freeze

All dried off and warm again, playing with his cousin Tilly.  She’s only 18 months older than Jaedon, but there’s a considerable size difference between the two. I think our boy’s got a bit of growing to do.

There. That feels better.  I’ve missed being here. It’s good to feel the urge again.  :)

Fulfilling my promise

A few posts ago I mentioned I’d be back in the new year with a download to share with you all.  It’s really only relevant for fellow photographers, but useful to anyone who likes to blog with large and multiple images.  And I realise a great deal of people would be able to do this for themselves if they had the time but, let’s face it, not many of us do.  Soooooo if you fit into any of these above categories I have something for you that should hopefully save you a bit of time and effort when it comes to blogging your favourite images.

Basically I’ve created a set of actions to be used in photoshop should you wish to post multiple images without overwhelming your readers with photos. They are somewhat similar to storyboards but are made as actions rather than templates. And they generally only have a width of 900 pixels, so are ideal for posting a collection of images, be it 2 or 9, in a space roughly similar to what one photo would normally take up.  If you want to view the formats I have designed them in, please watch the below slideshow for a demonstration:

The actions come in a zipped file, so all you have to do is unzip it and load it up into Photoshop, and away you go.  They’ve been created in CS4 but should work in previous versions without any problems.
All that said, if you think this would be of help to you I would love for you to download it free of charge right here.  I’ve had a lot of generous people help me out along the way and this is just one small way I can return the favour. And I’d love to hear what you think of them, so please feel free to drop me a note in the comment box.

I trust the new year is being kind to you all.
Narrelle x

{Oh, and I have yet to pick my camera up since taking the last 366 photo – it feels nice to be taking a break.  Though I can feel ‘the itch’ seeping into my bones already. Give it another day or so…  :) }
