Re-visiting an old post…

This is a post I shared a while back, when both my business and blog were quite young. I know there are considerably more people that read my blog now and may have missed this in the archives, and I’ve been feeling strongly about giving it another shout out lately.  I’m going to re-post the whole entry though rather than provide a link back because, if you’re anything like me, and your days are as busy as mine, it might seem like too much work to click on it.  :)   So here goes:

THE LITTLEST HEROES PROJECT – Capturing Miracles, Picturing Cures

What is The Littlest Heroes Project?  Let me quote a piece from their website:

“The Littlest Heroes Project is a non-profit based organization made up of professional photographers nationwide that provide free photo sessions to our nations Littlest Heroes. This is their way of giving back and taking a stand for these children who sometimes feel forgotten because of their illnesses. We are here to let them know that they are heroes to many, and to share their inspirational stories and photos with the world.

If you have a child, or know a child, who suffers from any type of serious illness we are here to help. The Littlest Heroes Project provides you with a complimentary photo shoot for your hero and family … Super Sibs and the Brave Parents are welcome to participate in the session as well!

Eligibility for the project: Any child or young person (Infant-21) that is currently fighting or has fought or suffers from any of the following: Autism, Alopecia, AIDS, Bell’s Palsy, Cancer,Chiari Malformation,Cystic Fibrosis, Cerebral Palsy, CHD,Childhood Stroke, Servere Diabetes, Down Syndrome, HIV,Immune System disorders and diseases, Kidney Disease, Muscular Dystrophy, Neurocutaneous Syndromes, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Shaken Baby Syndrome, Sickle Cell Anemia, Spina Bifida, Tay-Sachs Disease
(If your child’s illness is not listed and you are interested, please e-mail felicia@littlestheroesproject.org … This is just a basic list of illnesses of children we have already photographed!) “

I first heard of this project through a flickr contact of mine, Felicia Reinhard (I’d encourage you to go check her profile out. Her own story is very heartfelt and encouraging. She is such a beautiful young lady).
I visited their website (http://www.littlestheroesproject.org/) and was reduced to humble tears as I read the testimonies and trials of families who’s lives have been forever altered by disease and sickness, many of which I’d never even heard of.  As a parent of two young ones myself, I found it unbeliveably heartbreaking and agonising to even imagine myself in their position.
I  can’t recall the amount of times I have looked apon my life, wishing I was smarter at this, or better at that, as pretty as her, as outgoing as him etc etc.  I’m sure you know what I mean – we’ve all been there (if you haven’t, I wish I was more like you…. :) ).  And perhaps it’s a stereotypical response, but as I read through the stories of these children and their families, I felt so selfish and guilty. Who am I to complain about my life. At his point in time I have everything I could ever want.
It was a pretty easy decision for me to volunteer as a photographer for this organisation.  I don’t always feel like I’m the best photographer in the world (actually, I rarely do, but we won’t go there again lol) but I do know there are lives that can be touched with what I have to offer. How often do we get that opportunity in life.
So if you have a child, or know of one, that is affected by any of the illnesses mentioned above, please contact me via the contact button at the top of this page. It would be my pleasure to organise a complimentary photo session for you.  It’s the least I can do.
And please check out The Littlest Heroes Project webpage (linked above, or under my links button at the top of the page) if you are after more information.

It really has been on my heart for a while now to share this post again as I firmly believe it is up to us to share the gifts we have been blessed with, to help those around us.  Photography mightn’t seem like the most obvious, or even important, gift at times. But I’ve seen faces light up, brighter than I’d have hoped, and unplanned tears fall at the sight of a memory captured forever.
There are instances when a moment in time, frozen for eternity, can become a most treasured possession. I’ve seen it, and felt it myself.  So from my viewpoint it’s one of the best gifts I can offer.
So if you, or someone you know, is affected by illness please contact me via the link at the top of the page.

On being a mum.

He was curled up on the sofa, tucked in under his ‘baby blanket’. His eyes were red and tired, and his lips were desperately trying to stop themselves from trembling. He looked at me, I mean right at me, and said, “Can you make it all better? Please, mummy.” It broke my heart.

The kids have both been sick all week. It started off with Alicia-Rae getting croup and it morphing into the worse cold I’ve seen her suffer through. Jaedon caught the cold, followed by her croup. But he was disadvantaged in that he was already exhausted from being woken by Alicia-Rae during the past several nights. So he has been a sad-faced, tired little boy today, full of misery. And the only thing he asked of me was, “Can you make it all better? Please, mummy.”

I wish I could – as all mothers do when they see their children suffer. And I wish that kisses and cuddles would always heal his pain, and that he didn’t have to wake up one day and realise that they don’t. And as much as mummy would give everthing she has to make it (whatever it is) better, she can’t. If only life were that simple.

So for now I cherish that beautiful, simple belief that mummy’s love is enough to fix anything and everything. I know it won’t always be that way – but he has enough time to figure that out for himself. In the meantime I have lots of kisses waiting for him, and as many cuddles as he’ll ever need. They might not always be what he needs, but they’ll always be there when he needs them.

Creatures of Habit

It’s probably our fault, but perhaps it’s just a part of their personalities. Well, Jaedon’s at least. He THRIVES on routine. But, as I said, we could be the cause of that.
As a baby, as little as 3 days old, we had him on a routine. He slept at certain times, had appointed slots in his schedule for feeding. The only thing he didn’t do to plan was poop. That was free for all.  :)   But it worked great, for all of us. Alicia-Rae fell into almost exactly the same routine, by herself. We didn’t have to enforce anything on her. And both of them were sleeping through the night by 8 weeks of age.  I’m not preaching routine here, by the way, just using it to get to the end of my story.
Now we have at least one very particular child on our hands. Especially when it comes to bed-time. Everything has to be done to routine. His pyjamas go on. The trains are tidied up, and Sodor Island packed away for the night. The alpahabet song is played on his toy piano (which is placed in it’s exact positioning on top of his box of trains). The shadows of Jaedon and daddy, dancing on the loungeroom wall, are said goodnight to. Teeth are brushed. Stories are read. Drinks are had. Prayers are said. Kisses are shared. And it’s the same thing. Every night. But we love it, and are very grateful for it. As soon as the pyjamas are out, he knows where things are headed. He might not like it, but the pull of routine is too much for him. Hence we rarely have trouble getting him, or his sister, to bed. At 7:30pm.
It’s my favourite time of the day. Not (just) because they’re going to bed, but because I love watching them and their quirky little ways, knowing what comes next. It makes me feel all bubbly inside with happiness. And the joy of being a mother. And I do need that sometimes.
Last night I finally got around to capturing their rendition of the Alphabet Song on the piano (with a bit of help from daddy).  I’ve watched it a dozen times already and it still makes me smile. So I thought I’d share it here.  If it brings a smile to a single face, or reminds just one woman why it’s great to be a mum, I’ll be happy.
*And just as a side-note… Jaedon definately gets his singing ability from me.

Have a great weekend all.

Back, and on the go again.

So we returned from our week away over the weekend.  We had a wonderful time, touring the southern coast of Victoria – not too far from home but it was kind of impromptu, so we had no time to book flights or accomodation etc. I guess it was a kind of mad thing to do with two young kids in tow, but they coped marvelously – probably much better than we did.
I have a tonne of photos, naturally, which I might share along the way – once I get to go through them all.  I have a couple of sessions I need to edit first though, so it will take a great deal of self-control to stay away from them for now.  Maybe I might just have a little peep every now and then.
If you sent me an email during this last week and haven’t heard back from me, that’s why.  I did try to set a ‘holiday notification’ to go out in response, but it was all a bit technical and I’m not sure I got it working. Nevertheless I’m sure you’ll hear from me very soon.

And I just had to say that yesterday was a truly lovely day. I hope all of you out there that are also mums (or moms) were well looked after and deservedly spoiled. I was. And just to show you how wonderful my hubby and kids are, here’s just a little collage to show just how spoiled I was.

Out of Office

Just a quick note to let you know that I will be unable to answer emails this week, as I will be away from the office. I should still be able to take phone calls though if you need to reach me.
I hope you all have a lovely week – I certainly plan on doing the same.

And just because I can’t post without adding photos, here’s a few of my favourites of the kiddos this week.
