366 pieces of life | Day 362 (4 days to go…)

I think the last few days were just a bit much excitement for our poor little guy.  He had a bit of a grizzle-fest this morning.  Most things we said or did seemed to make him miserable.  And most things he did himself made him miserable too…
But Nanna came to the rescue.  Out came his beloved Thomas book, and as she read to him he fell asleep - totally zonked out on her lap. We could hear him snoring halfway down the other end of the house. Obviously he needed it (hey, don’t we all,  But we can’t all get away with it in the middle of the day).
I wish I could say it cheered him up some, but it didn’t really.  But we all got an hour’s peace.  :)

And it was back out to our block this afternoon, to show Matt’s brother around. We walked right up to the back end of the property, which backs onto open acreage full of cows, and Alicia-Rae was fascinated by them, calling out to them with her gentle moo’s.  I don’t think they were paying much attention to her though, and she gave up eventually. She kept a good eye on them though while enjoying her cuddles with Nanna.
I can’t wait till we’re eventually living out there, and the cows are a part of their every day. And the space. And the smell of eucalyptus. And the sounds of kookaburras. And no traffic. Mmmmmmmm

366 pieces of life | Day 351

One of the first things we’re going to buy to put on the block is a swing set. Followed by a hammock. Both of them designed to keep Jaedon amused and happy while we’re there.
We spent the day visiting cousin Tilly today, and playing with her toys. But by far the most fun he had was on their hammock.  I can’t remember the amount of times I came close to having a heart attack as he wrapped himself in the fabric and tipped himself upside down, to face the concrete below.  But it’s like a magnet each time we go there (as is anything that has an element of danger) so we’re hoping it would have the same effect at the block. At the moment it’s a battle to get him out of the car, so we’re willing to try anything.  And I’m sure mummy will enjoy the benefits of it also.

Alicia-Rae’s choice of fun activities at her cousins’ is of course playing in the the dirt.  They have a dog that loves to dig, and leave half started holes around the yard.  Alicia-Rae sees it as her mission in life to finish them off for him.  One day she’s going to uncover something that’s not quite dirt - but that probably wouldn’t faze her either.
Here she is with both her hands full of dirt, and her joy at throwing it at mummy. Thankfully she hasn’t got a very good aim just yet.

366 pieces of life | Day 348

We have a chocoholic in our house. And it’s not me. Well, not this time.  :)
Daddy had slipped out this afternoon while Alicia-Rae was napping, and I was on the pc editing some photos.  Jaedon was outside - or so I thought.  When daddy arrived back home Jaedon came rushing out of the kitchen area to greet him, munching on something. Apon inspection we found a half munched block of Cadbury’s Caramello, which used to be in the fridge, sitting on the dining table. And the remainder smeared around Jaedon’s mouth.  Hmmmm.  Guilty till proven otherwise.
He wasn’t very happy when we told him off and took it away - but it was nothing a good cuddle from daddy couldn’t fix. And, again, we were amazed by the fact that no matter how much trouble our children may find themselves in, or how mad either of us might get at them, they still come to us to be comforted.  We find great joy in them being so secure of our love for them, and pray that they always retain that faith in us.

And onto lighter matters, :) - we decided to make the most of the typical Melbourne weather today by window shopping for tiles and flooring for our house yet to be built. We’ve decided that we have a lot of work cut out for us if we have to take the kids along each time we go to pick out building materials. I think we spent more time entertaining the kids than we did actually looking at anything.  Still, we discovered that Alicia-Rae loves sitting in the shopping trolleys, especially when daddy dances and sings for her. But she was pretty happy just being taken for a ride.  For a few minutes anyway.

366 pieces | Day 345

Life’s great when the only thing you have to do to keep the kids happy is take them for a ride on the train.  :)
It was a bit of a late night last night - I met with some fellow photographers in Melbourne for a bit of a Christmas dinner, followed by a wander down the river by Southbank taking some photos (it’s been a loooooong time since I’ve seen the clock hit 2 in the am stage of it’s travels…).  Needless to say I was a bit bleary-eyed this morning and figured it was probably best to get me and the little ones out of the house and go on a bit of an adventure.  This translated as catching the train into the city to pick up a spare battery (finally) for the new camera.
Jaedon was in his element as always, even wearing one of his Thomas t-shirts to complete the experience.  I can’t get over how ‘old’ he looks in this photo though - not so much like my little baby anymore.

And we have waited a long time for this shot of Alicia-Rae.  Unlike her brother she hasn’t become attached to any toys/dolls/blankets etc,.  We’ve diligently put Piglet to bed with her every night (and every nap) for the last 12 months or so, only to find the poor pink pig stuffed through the bars and laying in a lonely heap on the floor whenever we go back in. Being as independant as she is it hasn’t really surprised us.  But today she hasn’t let go of him - in fact she’s been smothering him with the cuddles of a long lost friend all day.  It’s been sooo sweet!  It’s funny that something so ‘insignificant’ would have me so happy.  :)

And here’s an ‘out-take’ which I just had to share - she just makes my heart melt looking at her. I can’t wait to see the beautiful young woman she becomes.

And one more photo to leave you with, taken during our travels last night.  I LOVE Melbourne at night - it’s such a beautiful city.

366 pieces of life | Day 343

Today’s photo of Jaedon was taken while we were having a chat - he was telling me some marvelous story about goodness knows what (he still has his own ‘language’ with recognisable words like ‘green one’, ‘train’, ‘Thomas’, and ‘milk’ thrown in for good measure).  I’m sure it was a good one.  :)
But I like this shot simply because of his lips. He has great lips. Meant for kissing. Just like his daddy.  :)

And these shots of Alicia-Rae were taken for some good friends of ours back in England. When Alicia-Rae was born they sent over package apon package of beautiful clothes for her.  We’ve hardly had to buy anything for her up until now.
Being in all different sizings we put bits and pieces away until she grew into them. This is the last of the lot - it’s so gorgeous and girly, I just love it!!

366 pieces of life | Day 341 (and change is here…)

Before I start with the 366 post, I just wanted to say how excited I am about my new look (yes, you have come to the right blog….).  I’ve been making a few changes to the business lately (one of those being my pricelist and packages, so if you want to get in on the current pricelist please make sure to book within the next 25 days) and I’m really loving the ‘new me’.  But don’t be alarmed if you see a few more minor changes over the coming few weeks. Who knows, there may even be a few surprises along the way.

Back to our 366 pieces of life…
Today’s photos of Jaedon were taken while mucking around in the yard this morning. Daddy had rolled a yellow rubber ball along the ground for Jaedon to catch and I don’t know what he thought it was but he promptly picked it up and took a bite out of it. As you do, I guess, when you’re still only nearly three and don’t need a reason or excuse for doing whatever comes to mind at the time.
Anyway, I didn’t quite capture his full reaction, but I don’t think he was all that impressed with the end result. It obviously didn’t taste anything like he was expecting. But, considering the only other thing that comes in that shape and colour (that I know of) is a lemon, I think he got off lightly.

Alicia-Rae’s been in heaven this weekend. We have Nanna and Grandpa down for a few days which means she has an extra two people to play up to.  :)  She just loves people and company, and having people shower attention on her (but who doesn’t…), which Nanna and Grandpa are more than happy to do. Which suited me fine because I was free to sit back and take some photos, and simply watch.
Alicia-Rae and Nanna were having great fun playing ball together - AR is actually getting quite good at throwing and kicking. It’s probably a given when you grow up with an older brother (like hers, anyway).  Give her a few months and we’ll probably have some goal posts set up in the back yard, or a net strung between the trees.

366 pieces of life | Day 340

Jaedon had great fun trying to run me over today.
The fun for today was getting mummy to stand still in one spot while Jaedon rode as fast as he could towards her, and she’d jump out of the way at the last moment. Causing hysterics and begs for ‘again, again!’.
I love how they invent their own fun at this age, and it doesn’t (often) cost anything. And I love the laughs that come from right down deep inside the belly. Beautiful.

I can’t remember what Alicia-Rae was doing when I took this photo (too many images ago…), but knowing her it could have been anything. It makes me laugh anyway.
She’s such a little character, with oodles of personality.  And she already loves to play make believe. So she could have been sneaking up on fairies, pushing my exercise ball around (which has somehow made it’s way down to the back yard), chasing her brother, or getting ready to take a flying leap onto the clothes swinging from the line.  But I also have a vague memory of her dancing to a song that Jaedon and I were singing together.  I guess she could have been doing anything she wanted us to believe she was.  And I’m sure it won’t be the last time.  :)

A weekend in photos

We had a fun weekend as a family (a rare one off). Lots of driving (not too much, but enough to allow the kids a decent nap each), visiting good friends, chasing birds and feeding ducks, terrorising daddy, indulging mummy her endless habit of whipping her camera out, jumping in puddles, running in long grass… the kind of stuff all great weekends, memories and photographs are made of.  :)
One project I had in mind for the weekend was to take a photo of Alicia-Rae with a chair that used to belong to me when I was her age.  This was for an online child photography forum I’m a part of - they have a competition/challenge going at the moment and the theme is ‘Old and beautiful’ - the only stipulation being that the photograph had to contain a child and something antique (ie over 25 years old).  I guess that would make me antique, but unfortunately I didn’t qualify.  :)
I had to give up on getting a photo of Alicia-Rae actually sitting in the chair - I don’t know if there were many other ants about but her pants were definately full of them. She would not sit still for me!  Maybe she was trying to tell me something though, as I think we did ok anyway.  :)

While this was going on Jaedon was busy chasing a baby Magpie around, or being chased himself for some food.  The poor little bird wasn’t too impressed with Jaedon’s thoughts that it might like some dried leaves and twigs to eat.

Alicia-Rae then got involved in her own thing again, when mummy had stopped harassing her (all in the name of photography). But she did notice when Jaedon had disappeared, wandering off after the bird who was in search of a more appetising dinner, and was keen to keep an eye out for him. Probably after inspiration for more mischief she could get up to.

And just a couple from the day before. I love this one below. It reminds me of the scene from Gladiator where Maximus is dreaming about walking through the wheat fields of Elysium, to be reunited with his family (though Alicia-Rae looks like she’s searching for something to destroy instead).

And spot the Jaedon in the same patch of rye-grass, our very own Crouching Tiger, Hidden Jaedon.  :)

I could handle lots more weekends like this last one. Which is just as well as I’m sure there’ll be many more to come.  :)

Dora the Explorer

No - it’s not about the cartoon version. We have our own little ‘Dora’, whose favourite activity is exploring everything she lays her eyes and hands on.
It was a gorgeous day out yesterday so, needing some fresh air, we headed out for a bit. Nowhere exciting - just down to the front yard, and up and down our street.  But I guess one place is as fun as the next when you’re 1 and 2.  That’s one of the great things about young children - you don’t have to go anywhere fancy to impress them, and they can make fun out of just about any situation.

For Alicia-Rae, her fun consisted of picking dandelions from the front nature-strip…

…examining the moss between the tiles on our landing, and playing with the not-so-healthy shrubbery sticking out between the bannisters…

…and busying herself picking up the dead fir from the neighbours trees, nicely putting it back in their yard for them.  :)

It’s such a treat to see them at this age, where everything is new, and one great big adventure.  It kinda reminds me what life is all about, and there’s no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than that.

Jaedon was having his own bit of fun too, which was great to watch.  It’s been such a joy to see him smile again after being ill on and off for the last 6 weeks.  I feel like we’ve finally gotten our little boy back again. Yay!

This was from the morning’s trip to the park - he was on one of those things his daddy describes as a ‘whirly pole’.  :)   It kind of looks like a pogo stick stuck in the ground, but when stood on it spins around in a circle - I think from the effects of gravity and momentum. Something like that.  lol.  Anyway, Jaedon loved it, and I loved the deep belly laughs and squeals it produced.

And this is him dancing on the front landing - it looks like he’s doing the Tango to me.  :)  (And you can just see the remnants of his cold-sores.  :(  )

And here he is having dizzy-whizzies with daddy. He can always count on daddy for some good old fashioned fun.

It was the kind of day we all needed, and I’m glad I managed to catch it on ‘film’.
These are the kind of memories I like to hang on to and treasure. But I know so well already how moments I’m sure will last forever eventually blend into the other memories stored in that box.  That’s what I love about photography - even in my mind fails me, I still have the evidence of a life well-lived, and well-loved.
